Psalm 119:73—“Your hands have made me and fashioned me; Give me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments.”
This is an interesting verse with several parts. Every human is made in the image of God; that’s how He created us (Gen. 1:26), which is one reason abortion is wrong. God gives life, in His image, and that life begins at conception, not at birth or some indeterminate time during pregnancy (at what point in the pregnancy does God’s “image” appear in us?). Notice David said God’s “hands” made and fashioned him. God doesn’t have “hands” like we understand them, but the thought does make the idea personal—God is the one who created us and formed us in the way He wanted us to be. Those who aren’t happy with their gender, frankly, need to get over it and submit to God as He created them.
And the next statement of David would help them. He asks God for “understanding.” Why are we here? What is the purpose of life? What does God want us to do on this earth? Understanding those question can only come when we “learn Your commandments.” In His word, God answers all those conundrums for us. If we will humbly submit to him, He will guide us and lead us on this earth, and direct us to the heavenly home, where we can be with Him forever. When we reject the Bible, we cannot comprehend this life; and we see the untold tragedies in our world today because so many refuse to “learn” God’s Word.
He made us, fashioned us, and will give us understanding through His Word. What else can He do? It isn’t His fault if we refuse to listen to Him.
