A Little More on Last Week’s Debate
A couple of final thoughts about last week’s Republican debate. A Washington Post/Ipsos poll of 700-odd Republicans indicated that 29% of them though Ron DeSantis had “won” the debate. 26% said Vivek Ramaswamy was victorious. Nikki Haley was the only other candidate to get into double digits, with 15%. If you shout loud enough, some people will hear you.
Except for Haley, I pretty much agree with the above. Vivek made a couple of stupid mistakes that hurt him, while DeSantis was largely error-free. Haley’s conviction that man-made climate change is real, and her uber-support of Biden’s Ukraine war will eventually destroy any possibility she might have. Those two things are enough to decimate any candidate, as far as I’m concerned. She’d be better than Biden, but not enough.
The other candidates, barring some extraordinary intervention, are finished. They should just drop out and support either Trump or DeSantis because, ultimately, the choice will come down to between those two. Vivek probably isn’t going to be able to swing enough support behind him to challenge the Big Two. But, we’ll see what happens. Still a long way to go.
I don’t know when the next debate will be held. Keep an eye out.
