Bible Meditation: Psalm 119:10
Psalm 119:10—“With my whole hear I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!”
Two thoughts in this beautiful verse, how we should seek the Lord, and a prayer for righteousness. Jeremiah 29:13 reads, “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” A half-hearted search for God is insufficient. And it should be. He is God. He is our Creator. He deserves our very best. And He will accept nothing less. “Those who seek me diligently will find me” (Proverbs 8:17). He certainly wants to be found by man, and “He is not far from each one of us” (Acts 17:27). But He does demand total obedience (Luke 14:33), and that is exactly what we should expect from a perfect, holy God. Would we want to serve Him otherwise?
Then David pleads for help: “Oh let me not wander from your commandments!” If we leave God, it will be our fault. He isn’t going to push us away. But we still need His help, and we really have no comprehension what God can do, in His providence, to protect us from sin. “Lead us not into temptation,” Jesus taught us to prayer. God will never “lead” us into temptation, but Jesus is telling us that He can protect us from it in ways we don’t understand. And we will probably never even know He is doing it.
So, yes, if we disobey God, it is totally our fault. But let’s also ask Him for His help in continuing to serve and obey Him. He is “able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us” (Ephesians 3:20).
