Bible Meditation: Psalm 119:2
Psalm 119:2—“Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart.”
A “partial-hearted” search will never find God: “You will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). For most of us, our own hearts are our worst spiritual enemy. As Martin Luther wrote, “I am more afraid of my own heard that I am of the pope and all his cardinals.”
There is another “blessing” pronounced here, upon those who keep God’s testimonies (His word; nearly every verse in Psalm 119, in some form or fashion, refers to God’s word). The one who is “blessed” is obviously truly well-off in God’s eyes. That is the basic meaning of the word, and it’s the meaning Jesus has in the beatitudes of Matthew 5. So, the first two verses of Psalms 119 tell us that the person who walks in the law of the Lord, who keeps His testimonies (basically the same thing), and who seeks God with his whole heart is “blessed.” There will be advantages to such in this life—any avoidance of sin is indeed a positive. The problems we see in the world today are not being caused by faithful, New Testament Christians. This is just a guess (and pardon my sarcasm), but the fellow in Maine who just shot and killed dozens of people was probably not a faithful Christian, at least not one in his right mind. There are things that are simply impossible for true followers of Christ, and that is one of them. A “blessed” life is a true, peaceful spiritual journey with an ultimate destination in heaven. That is what we all should seek.
