Psalm 119:21-“You rebuked the proud, the cursed, Who stray from Your commandments.”
Pride is certainly one of the main reasons humans refuse to obey God. They do not wish to humble themselves and be obedient to the Almighty. “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). But if we “humble [ourselves] in the sight of the Lord...He will lift [us] up” (James 4:10).
The “problem” is, of course—and I say it is a “problem,” and beg the reader’s indulgence—is that God is so patient and longsuffering that He usually does not punish the wicked immediately upon commission of sin. Thus, “Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil” (Ecclesiastes 8:11). Rather than appreciate the mercy and longsuffering of God, evil men conclude, when they “get away” with sin, that God doesn’t exist, or doesn’t see, or doesn’t care, or some other such false conclusion. We should all be thankful that God does NOT punish us immediately. “The goodness of God leads you to repentance” (Romans 2:4). Or it should. But usually it doesn’t.
And that is why most people will be lost (Matthew 7:13-14). And why God will, in His own time, “rebuke the proud, the cursed, who stray from [His] commandments.”
