Psalm 119:23—“Princes also sit and speak against me, But Your servant meditates on Your statutes.”
In verse 22, David asked God to remove him from the “reproach” and “contempt” of men. In this verse, he indicates that contempt reaches to the very highest level—even “princes...sit (waste time) and speak against me.” Evil knows no gender, race, or economic class. Those who should be leading the people (the princes) are often as wicked, if not more so, than the ones whom they lead. That happened in ancient Israel (see my recent article “People Will Follow Their Leaders”), and it is certainly happening in America today, as Joe Biden and the Democratic Party are directing America in the most hedonistic path in its history. With not an ounce of shame or remorse.
But, in one sense, David isn’t going to let it bother him. He can’t control what other people think, but he can control himself. He will be a “servant” of God and “meditate” on God’s statutes. If we do the same thing, and obey those statutes faithfully, we will have the eternal life promised us by Jehovah.
It’s best that, as much as we can, we get our mind out of this world (“love not the world,” I John 2:15), and think on eternal spiritual values. We won’t be on this earth for very long. We’ll be—somewhere—in eternity for, well, for eternity.
