Psalm 119:29—“Remove from me the way of lying, And grant me Your law graciously.”
Joe Biden and every politician should read this verse every day. Truth is what saves us (John 8:32), and truth is embodied in God’s Word (John 17:17). Lying can be very easy, especially when we get away with it or are not held accountable for it. Politicians aren’t the only ones who lie, of course, but they do seem to be especially good at it. Having to get elected means pleasing as many people as possible, and politicians will tell half-truths and deceptions, or simply ignore the truth, in order to hold onto their positions of power. And the rest of us can be guilty of lying when we think it might be advantageous to do so.
The fact that David asks the Lord to “remove” him from “the way of lying” indicates David’s realization of his own temptation towards that sin. We all should pray the same prayer, and ask God to “graciously” grant us His law. Again, His word is truth, so the more we hide His word in our heart, the less we will sin (Psalms 119:11). It is a gracious thing for God to give us His word and guidance, for none of us deserve it, “no, not one” (Romans 3:10). Ingratitude might be the most heinous sin of all, for it certainly leads to many others.
