Psalm 119:32—“I will run the course of Your commandments, For You shall enlarge my heart.”
David will not only keep God’s commandments, he will hasten to do so—“run the course (way).” He is going to devote a lot of energy to being obedient to God. It wasn’t good enough for David to just be obedient to God. He intended to put forth extra effort to please his Maker. What a marvelous attitude! How many of us truly have such a disposition? I dare say, very few.
David then expressed his confidence that God, in His providence, would help him by “enlarging” David’s heart. God has given us freedom of will, thus He will not force anyone to be obedient to Him. If our hearts, like Pharaoh’s, are inclined to be hard, then God can certainly use that to accomplish His will anyway. Pharaoh and his people are the ones who suffered, not God. But if we have the tender, contrite heart that we should have, then God can grant us the grace necessary that, through His providential will, we can fulfill whatever plans and goals he has for us. Never forget—we are on this earth to serve God, not visa-versa. He will help us, and we should give Him thanks. He will use us if we will let Him. And sometimes, He will use us even if we don’t want Him to. Ultimately, His will is going to be done. The wise will submit to that will now, while time is still available, for the eternal consequences of not doing so are horrid indeed.
