Here I Stand: I’m a Christian First, Then a Conservative
The title of this article says it all: my first allegiance is to Jesus of Nazareth, not to a political ideology. Now, my Christian beliefs are one reason I am “conservative” politically. I do believe that most conservative ideas are more in harmony with Christianity than Leftist ideas, which are largely rooted in Darwinian and Marxian atheism. But I decide my beliefs based on what Jesus Christ said, not on what Donald Trump or Ron DeSantis says.
I do love America. It is my native land, and I am much grieved to see its current decadence, led largely by the Democratic Party. America is not, and never has been (and never will be) perfect because the country is composed of imperfect human beings. We’ve had some blights on our history—slavery, racism, some imperialistic hypocrisy—though all of these need to be better understood in their historical contexts, not judged by 21st century standards. Defending America does not mean defending everything America has ever done. That is impossible. And I don’t believe that God, when He looks down from heaven, sees red, white, and blue and stars and stripes. The color of a person’s heart, not the color of his flag or skin, is the only thing the Almighty cares about. And I will follow Him in that. Totally.
Unfortunately, because all humans are fallible, politically, one must nearly always choose the lesser of evils. Neither Donald Trump nor Joe Biden are what I would consider to be “good Christian men.” I do believe Trump’s policies would be superior for America than Biden’s, so I will support him for that reason. But there is a limit to my support for Trump, too. Here is one reason why.
After the passage of the godless “same sex marriage” law last year (you talk about a blight on the country...), Trump held a gala event for homosexuals at his Mar-al-Lago home (Karie Lake also attended). That tells me all I need to know about the “Christianity” of those two people. Even Tucker Carlson has caved on that issue; I heard him defend the law on his show soon after it was passed. I was very sad to hear Tucker do that.
For one reason: I am a Christian first, a “conservative” second. Homosexuality is sin, pure and simple. God said it is an “abomination” (Leviticus 18), “against nature” and “vile” (Romans 1), and those who practice such shall not inherit the kingdom of God (I Corinthians 6). There is absolutely no defense for that lifestyle, not from a Christian point of view. Thus, I will never have one good word to say about it. You can add adultery, rape, theft, murder, lying, and a whole host of other sins to that category. I oppose adultery as much as I oppose homosexuality. God hates both. So do it. “Conservatives” who crater to any sin will not get my support in those areas.
So again, politically, Christians are basically in the position of choosing between the lesser of evils when it comes to voting for our candidates. I will vote for Donald Trump over Joe Biden next year (if I vote at all) if they are the choices offered. And that will be because I believe Trump will do better for America than Biden. Frankly, I wish I had a better choice, two godly people to choose from. However, that day has passed in America, at least for the foreseeable future.
But, I want the readers of this Substack to know, I am a Christian first, and a conservative second. Everything I write here will be, to the best of my ability, in harmony with the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, and if Donald Trump, or any other politician gets in the way, so be it. I will stand before God some day and give an account of my life, and that includes what I write on this Substack. I will NOT compromise Christianity to placate a political audience. If that offends you, then you have the right to read other substacks and not mine. God bless you regardless.
I will defend Donald Trump when/if he does things I believe can be defended under the principles of the Christian religion—such as, economic frugality, opposition to godless communism, attacking humanity-destroying lies such as climate change, etc. He will not get my support if his views/policies contradict those of Jesus, such as, homosexuality. Here is where I stand and I will not budge one inch.
