I do hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season. Most people in Thailand are Buddhist, but there are a lot of western people here, so the Thai folks take advantage of Christmas to make a few bucks. That’s basically what Christmas has become anyway.
Actually, historically and Biblically, there is no evidence that Jesus was born on December 25. In fact, the best evidence puts His birth in the spring, but we simply have no idea. The Bible emphasizes His death and resurrection far more than His birth, as necessary and miraculous as that event was. It was in the fourth century when December 25 became the day selected for Jesus’s birth. The Catholic Church, such as it was at the time, made some compromises with pagans who worshipped the Sun God during the winter solstice. “Hey, instead of worshipping the Sun God, why don’t you guys worship our God, Jesus? We’ll put His birthday on December 25...” There were also some compromises made regarding Christ’s resurrection—“Easter,” bunnies, eggs, springtime, all of that. The Passover was when Jesus was killed and raised from the dead, but there’s nothing else about “Easter” (except a mistranslation in the old King James Bible) which remotely resembles our celebration. Again, these were compromises the Catholic Church made with pagans to try to entice them into Christianity. Given the current Catholic pope is also making compromises with current “paganism,” it isn’t a terribly surprising phenomenon. Trust the Lord, folks, not man, especially any man with power.
But, Christmas is still a wonderful season and I wish you all the best. God blesses us all year, and we need to be thankful at all times. I hope it will be a good time for you and your family.
