As I write this (Sunday morning Thailand time, Saturday night USA time), a few races in the House and the Senate still haven’t been decided/called. Why?? Why does it take these people so long to count the votes? Well, I’ve never been involved in the vote-counting process, so maybe there are some problems I don’t understand. But it does seem strange that most places can, but some can’t.
At this moment—again, as I write this—the Republicans hold 216 seats in the House and Democrats 208. That is a net gain of 0 for both parties. 218 is needed for control of the House. The Republicans apparently lead in a few of the remaining races, but they are all so close that they could go either way. The House majority is still up for grabs, though the Republicans are close.
The Republicans will control the Senate. They now have 52 seats so they will have the majority there. There are still two races that have yet to be called, in Pennsylvania where Republican David McCormick holds a nearly 40,000 vote lead with 95+% of the vote counted, and in Arizona, where Democrat Ruben Gallegos holds a 34,000 vote lead over Kari Lake with 85% of the vote totaled. There are some locations that have already called the Pennsylvania race for McCormick, but apparently Decision Desk, the “official” caller, has yet to do so. Arizona is a mess, as always. There are people in that state—and elsewhere—who hate Kari Lake and will do everything they can to keep her out of official. See my post on “Arizona Election Headlines.”
Hopefully, the Republicans can indeed win in Pennsylvania and take majority control in the House. I have little hope in Arizona.
