The Story of the Bible 6
Genesis 5—From Seth to Noah
NEVER forget that the theme of the Old Testament is “Christ is coming.” A perfect creation and then the fall of man into sin. God immediately promised to send a Redeemer, and he would come as a man. Adam and Eve bore Cain and Abel; Abel appears to have been the son through whom this Messiah would come (Genesis 4:25). But the devil took care of Abel (via Cain’s murder), so “God...appointed another seed for me instead of Abel,” Eve said. His name was Seth.
Genesis 5 traces the descendants of Seth down to Noah—Enosh, Cainan, Mahalalel, etc. After mentioning the birth of each of these men, the Bible says that he “had sons and daughters.” Enosh was not the only child of Seth. But, for the purpose of the Old Testament and man’s redemption, he was the only really important one.
Noah becomes the next truly significant personage the Bible spends time talking about because something very noteworthy happened in his lifetime. We all know what it was, but I will wait until my next article to talk further about it.
