Trump 86% in Florida “Turning Point” Poll
I’ve been saying for weeks that polls, at present, mean virtually nothing since the vast majority of American people aren’t really paying much attention to political races right now. Donald Trump is dominating every Republican poll, and in this past weekend’s “Turning Point Action Conference” poll he received almost 86% of the vote in a straw poll. This doesn’t look too good for Ron DeSantis, especially since that conference was held in West Palm Beach, Florida. DeSantis does appear to be spinning his wheels at the moment. Or...is it just that the vast majority of American people aren’t really paying attention to political races right now? Some observations and not-so-conclusive conclusions.
Is Trump really this popular among Republicans, or was the Florida conference just dominated by Trump-supporters? DeSantis received only 4.3% of the vote in the straw poll. A man named Perry Johnson—who I have never even heard of—came in second in the poll with 7.8% of the vote. This all seems a little strange.
It is quite evident that the pro-Trumpers in the Republican Party are trying to end the race before it really even begins. “It’s over, everybody, Trump is going to win, and all the other candidates should go ahead and line up behind him, unify the party, and support him in the election.” That is what the Trump people want us to believe and what they hope will happen. It almost surely won’t happen.
But these Republicans have the Democrat media behind them, for there is no question that the Democratic Party faithful also want Donald Trump to win the Republican nomination. They strongly believe that Trump has no chance at all of winning another national election, even against an unpopular Joe Biden, so, please, Republicans, renominate Trump. Trump is getting most of the media coverage, in Democratic and Republican circles, and what little coverage DeSantis is getting—especially among pro-Trump Republicans—is nearly all negative. It almost looks like a conspiracy to get Trump nominated.
A quick question: can Trump win the Presidency again? Democrats, as noted, don’t think so, and many, many Republicans agree with that. I’m not going to say Trump can’t win the presidency again—Biden is sooo incredibly incompetent and voters in a democracy can be unbelievably fickle--but I will say that, if Mr. Trump does win the Republican nomination, and regains the White House, I will be surprised.
The anti-DeSantis nature of the Florida conference was further in evidence by the fact that, when participants were asked who their second choice was, 51% selected Vivek Rawaswamy. Is there that strong of an anti-DeSantis feeling in the Republican Party? In Florida?? I doubt it. That, and the results of this straw poll, is what makes me believe that this conference was stacked, maybe even deliberately, with pro-Trump people. Trying to give the appearance the race is already over.
It may be. Time will tell. I talked about this some yesterday in my audio podcast, but you have to be a paid subscriber to listen to it. Time will tell if anybody can overcome Mr. Trump. At present, he certainly looks like the nominee. Ask again in a few months when more people are paying attention.
