"We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt"--Thomas Jefferson
Haha, that's a laugh, isn't it
Well, it’s not really funny, but unfortunately, nations and empires decline, and America sure has. What Jefferson said is obviously just plain common sense, but America currently has the worst crop of leaders, on both sides of the aisle, it has ever had. They are utterly corrupt and irresponsible, and they are destroying, and will destroy, the country. I would like to be optimistic and give my readers some hope. But as most of you know, I am an historian and also have a degree in Bible, and, as far as this earthly existence is concerned, those are probably the two most anti-optimistic things a person can study. So I spend a lot of my time depressed.
The nice thing is, of course, this earth is not our final home and faith and obedience to a merciful God can lead to a glorious eternal life. That doesn’t solve our earthly problems that politicians create for us, but at least life is not total darkness. I have no clue how to solve the problem Jefferson mentions in the title of this article. The American people elect their leaders so, ultimately, it is our fault that they are there. We get the government we elect, thus we get the government we deserve. We have no one to blame but ourselves. The only thing we can do is keeping fighting, keep teaching, keep praying, and prepare for the better life to come. Because politicians, in whom so many Americans now put their faith, are the very ones who loading us with perpetual debt and destroying the country. Until we start electing virtuous rulers again—and that doesn’t appear to be imminent—America will continue to slide downhill. That’s just the truth, as sad as it is.
