I don’t know. I wish I did know, but I don’t, He doesn’t tell me, or anybody else. I often wonder what He is doing and why He doesn’t do the things that I think He ought to do. But all that tends to show is how little faith I actually have in Him.
In Isaiah 55:8-9, God said through the prophet, “’For My thoughts [are] not your thoughts, Nor [are] your ways My ways,’ says the LORD. ‘For [as] the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.’”
Now think about that a minute. How high are the “heavens” above the earth? Well, that is incalculable. Infinite. But that is how much higher God’s ways and thoughts are higher than our ways and thoughts. We see the finite, and we think things should be thus and so. God sees the infinite and knows, well, infinitely more than we do. He just doesn’t always do things the way WE think He should. And because we tend to do what we think HE ought to do, and not trust Him to do the things He thinks should be done WHEN they should be done...we can see the mess the world is in today because of that.
Hosea chapter 1 was written probably around 760 B.C. In that chapter, the Lord clearly says that He was going to “bring an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel” (the Northern Kingdom, v. 4). Their wickedness was great, and God’s patience had run out. However, it wasn’t until almost 40 years later that the prophecy was fulfilled (722/21 B.C.). God works in His own time and in His own way.
We know that justice will indeed someday come to the wicked. But only God knows the best time and in the best way. We see horrible evil in America today; “why doesn’t God do something?” He will. In His own time. His thoughts and ways are infinitely higher than our thoughts and ways. And our responsibility is to trust Him.
So, I don’t know what God is doing or when He will do it. Knowing those things isn’t my job anyway. Obeying Him is. That’s my part. And then letting Him do His.
